President Salih emphasized that marking the annual anniversary of the Altun Kupri Massacre committed by the Saddam regime calls upon us to meet the citizens' legitimate demands to build a democratic state that respects the rights of people.
In a statement issued today, the President pointed out that,we remember these days the suppressing crimes committed by Baath regimes against the popular uprising in 199. When the people rose up demanding their rights to freedom, democracy, trying to get rid of the dictatorial regime.
The tragedies to which Kirkuk people were subjected by Baath regime must urge all Kirkuk population in all its components to tackle the city's problems through understanding and cooperation without trusteeship or interference from any parties, in addition to make Kirkuk a model of peaceful coexistence, President said.
The following is the text of statement:
These days, we remember the suppressing crimes committed by Baath regimes against the popular uprising when the people rose up, demanding their rights to freedom, democracy, trying to get rid of the dictatorial regime who suppressed our people in all its components through persecutions, killings in addition to use, force and implicate the military to kill Iraqis.
After the military forces and the oppressive services of Baath regime suppressed the uprising of Kirkuk people who liberated their city from dictatorship, they killed the population regardless of their nationality, religion and sect.
As a result, hundreds of members of the Peshmerga forces and young men defending their city have been martyred. After the regime asserted control over Kirkuk, it committed a terrible crime in Altun Kupri district that groups of Turkmen residents have been extrajudicially   executed by firing squad in the public squares without trial and explanation and without having committed any capital offence.
These days, recalling this heinous crime, we are stressing that the best reminder of the sacrifices of the Turkmen of Iraq is to meet the citizens' legitimate demands to build a democratic state that respects the rights of people.
May God bless the souls of all the martyrs of Iraq and grant them paradise.
I extend our sincere condolences to the families, those who belong to Turkmen nationality, losing their loved one at the massacre of Altun Kupri.
I believe that the tragedies to which Kirkuk people were subjected by the Baath regime must urge all Kirkuk residents in all components to tackle the city's problems through understanding and cooperation without trusteeship or interference from any parties, in addition to make Kirkuk a model of peaceful coexistence.
Dr. Barham Salih,
