Iraqi President meets Dar al-Ifta Delegation: Religious Scholars Play an Important Role in Combating Sectarianism and Hate Speech, Contributing to the Fight Against extremism
On Wednesday, January 27, 2021, the President
of the Republic of Iraq, Barham Salih, met with a delegation from Iraqi Islamic
authority, Dar al-Ifta, headed by grand mufti, Sheikh Abdul-Mahdi al-Sumaidaie.
The meeting was held at Al Salam Palace in Baghdad.
President Salih spoke about the important role
that religious scholars play in combating hate speech and sectarianism. They
can promote peace and security in the country, the President said, as well as
social cohesion.
The Iraqi public was well aware that recent
terrorist and criminal acts in Iraq were committed with the aim of reigniting
social and sectarian tensions in Iraq, President Salih noted. One of the
country's priorities now was to strengthen the state's authority and that of
its security agencies in order to continue the all-important fight against
terrorism and extremism in Iraq, he concluded.
