Iraqi President: Elections Must be Free and Fair, A New Political Contract is Needed To Meet the Demands of the Iraqi People

On Wednesday, January 27, 2021, the President of the Republic of Iraq, Barham Salih, met with political experts and analysts at Al Salam Palace in Baghdad.
Recent political, economic and security-related developments in Iraq were discussed during the meeting. The importance of the country's next federal election, now slated for October, was stressed. Participants also agreed that it was important to continue the fight against extremism and terrorism and that this was best achieved by supporting Iraqi security and intelligence agencies.
President Salih said there was still much work to be done to prepare for the upcoming federal election. The ballot would be held under difficult conditions because the general public clearly believed that the country's current political trajectory was unsustainable and that a correction was needed, the President noted.
This meant that the upcoming election must be free, fair and transparent, President Salih said. The Iraqi people must be free to choose their own representatives without suspicion of fraud, manipulation or undue pressure on voters. A new political contract is needed, the President concluded, one that meets the demands of the Iraqi people.
