On Thursday, July 15, 2021, the President of the Republic of Iraq, Barham Salih talked over telephone with his Syrian counterpart, President Bashar al-Assad.
Iraqi-Syrian ties that link the two states and the two brotherly peoples were discussed, while the historical, geographical and social bonds were emphasized during the phone conversation.
It was stressed that there is a need to cope with the common challenges, especially those concerning the fight against terrorism.
The two leaders also spoke about how important it was to work together in order to enhance the bilateral ties. They agreed that there should be further cooperation and coordination in order to face the common threats.
Both leaders agreed that it was important to intensify and sustain our efforts in the fight against the remaining cells of the extremist group known as the Islamic State (IS) continuing to threaten citizens' lives and the safety and stability of the two countries.
These criminal groups must not be allowed to regroup themselves, and any flaws in security systems must be addressed, and this way we can ensure that the terrorists will not be able to carry out their criminal acts against both the Iraqi and the Syrian, the two sides said.
