President Barham Salih: It should be ensured that extremists involved in IS's crimes must be held accountable


On Monday, May 16, 2022, the President of the Republic of Iraq, Barham Salih met with Ms. Alice Wairimu Nderitu, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide. The meeting was held at al-Salam Palace in Baghdad.


Talks focused on the importance of investigating the crimes committed in Iraq by the extremist group known as the Islamic State/IS.

Both sides exchanged views on the need to have further cooperation and coordination between Iraq's competent governmental authorities and the UN investigation team.        

It is vital to ensure that those who are involved in the acts of the extremist group known as the Islamic State/IS, must be brought to stand trial and hold accountable, President Salih said, adding that the sources of terrorism should be dried up.

How important it was to document the terrorist acts committed by IS and collect evidence about crimes, particularly those relating to the mass graves, he continued.

Participants at the meeting agreed that everyone involved in the IS's crimes should be brought to justice and punished, and emphasized that these crimes must never again be allowed to occur, with a focus on the need to guarantee the victims' rights.
