On Monday, May 16, 2022, the President of the Republic of Iraq, Barham Salih met the head priest and spiritual leader of the Sabean-Mandean sect in Iraq, Sheikh Sattar Jabbar al-Helo alongside his delegation. The meeting took place at al-Salam palace in Baghdad.

 The Mandaeans are part of the indigenous people in Iraq and have a crucial role in the country's history, President Salih said while adding that they have significant contributions to the social, cultural, and humanitarian life.

They have kept their own national identity by coming together with Iraq's various components and standing beside them to share and face the challenges, he continues.

 Iraq's various social cohesion must be protected, he underlined, with a focus on the need to take advantage of this to be turned into a factor of strength in the Iraqi society.

The President emphasized that it is essential to ensure that the rights of various components of the Iraqi nation must be guaranteed, and Iraq's various components must be allowed to take part in the social and political life in order to ensure that their voice is heard, and their needs are met.

President Salih was briefed by the visiting delegation about the conditions of Iraq's Sabean-Mandean religious community, and the challenges being faced.

The President emphasized his eagerness to fully support the rights of the Mandaeans while underscoring the need to remove the obstacles that they face.
