President Rashid Meets UN Special Representative, Plasschaert


On Wednesday, November 23, 2022, the President of the Republic of Iraq, Abdullatif Jamal Rashid met with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Iraq, Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert. The meeting took place at Baghdad Palace.

The overall situation in the country in addition to efforts that are being made to address the files associated to improve the living conditions and economic situation of the citizens were discussed during the meeting.

 The meeting placed emphasis on the importance of supporting the government to implement its program and meeting Iraqi people's aspirations as well as improve their living conditions and the reality of the service as well.

  The UNAMI's role was discussed, and His Excellency President Rashid underscored that it is a matter of critical importance to work and coordinate with Iraq's authorities to tackle several issues, chiefly the issue of internally displaced persons, and this goal could be achieved by providing all the requirements which are necessary to improve their living conditions, and however, action should be taken to allow IDPs to return to their homes, and to be able to live in secure conditions,  and finally put an end to their suffering and enjoy the peace and security when they do so, it is, therefore, displacement file should be addressed, and then to be closed, once for all.

Emphasis was placed on the importance of promoting security and stability in the country and ensuring the safety of the Iraqis. Meeting's agenda included the discussion of strengthening communication and dialogue between Iraq and its neighbors.

Participants in the meeting asserted that these discussions should be based on common interests, mutual respect and the respect of each country's sovereignty, in the pursuit of the greatest security and stability for the region, so as to strengthen cooperation in sectors of mutual interest.
