Iraqi President Meets German Minister of State, Tobias Linder

vOn Wednesday, January 25, 2023, the President of the Republic of Iraq, Abdullatif Jamal Rashid met with the German Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, Tobias Lindner alongside the Head of Bilateral and European Relations with Iraq, Stefan Schneck, at the Baghdad Palace.

Germany-Iraq relations were discussed during the meeting, and His Excellency President Rashid emphasised the importance of developing bilateral ties between the two states, including economic and cultural sectors, in a way that serves both nations' citizens.

The President highlighted the need to maintain Iraq’s security and stability. We seek to build good relations with our neighbours, HE, said. The improvement of the public services for Iraqi citizens is prioritised by the current government within its ministerial programme, he added. We have long-term plans to commence strategic projects, such as the oil and gas project, the completion of the Faw project, and building public transport including railways, he went on to note that, and these would lead Iraq to serve as a link between Arab Gulf and Europe.

Regarding the Sinjar district,
Large numbers of people are still displaced, His Excellency said, and we are working on addressing their issues once and for all, by facilitating their return to their homes, and to this end, the right conditions must be created while public services and security must be ensured when they return.

There are good relations between Baghdad and Erbil, and the negotiating teams of the two sides are regularly visiting each other, President Rashid underlined, working on finding viable solutions to the protracted issues in accordance with the Iraqi constitution and law, and it is hoped that oil and gas law would be approved.

President Rashid spoke about the good relations between Iraq and Arab states and neighbours, indicating that there is cooperation with the states of the region to bring Iraq back to play its key role in the region.

Mr. Linder reiterated Germany's commitment to supporting Iraq's security and stability and the safety of its citizens. Additionally, he emphasised his country's eagerness to further develop relations with Iraq at every level and support Iraq to reclaim its crucial role in the Middle East and the world. Germany enhances efforts that aim to rebuild Sinjar and return the displaced people, he said.
